The Quietest Voice

A self-generating sound installation based on a rewrite system derived from the formalization of plant growth through an L-system. The algorithm operates autonomously according to the “voices” principle of the composition. Each element is structured in time and frequency according to this rewriting system, establishing a fractal relationship. The sound is produced via sound exciters, which, instead of projecting sound through the air like traditional speakers, use a surface to create vibrations. Consequently, the material, density, and surface area determine the quality and timbre of the sound, making the result unique and entirely site-specific. The artist intends to let his music grow according to the principles of natural growth, adapting to the installation site rather than imposing his presence.

The installation was created for the solo show Naturografie: Alla sorgente dei dati by Roberto Ghezzi at Wild Mazzini, Turin (May 30 – July 6, 2019), and was conceived to interact conceptually with Ghezzi’s works. While Ghezzi’s Naturografie record natural processes visually, the sound in The Quietest Voice emerges digitally, following organic growth principles, creating a perceptual dialogue between natural and algorithmic processes.
